Who can take the courses on Anesthesia & Analgesia CME?Up

The Anesthesia & Analgesia CME program is offered to IARS members as a free benefit of membership. Because the IARS supports 100% of the cost of this program, it is only available to IARS members. If you are not an IARS member, you can join the IARS through their website. ($140/year) and have full access to the CME program.

Because a CME record can only be associated with a specific individual, the CME program is not available through institutional subscriptions.

Why can't I log into the CME program?Up

The most likely reason is that you are not an IARS member. Institutional subscribers, and individual subscribers who are not members of the IARS, cannot log into the CME program, as explained above. However, the following links may also be helpful to you to diagnose any difficulties in logging in to the CME site:

How do I earn CME credit?Up

As an organization accredited for continuing medical education by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the International Anesthesia Research Society designates each CME course in this program for a maximum of 1 AMA Physician's Recognition Award Category 1 Credit™.

Credit from Anesthesia & Analgesia CME is granted on a per-course basis. In order to earn credits, first read the CME article! The "medical education" is the CME article in Anesthesia & Analgesia, not the course on the CME website.

After you have studied the article, take the course on this website to receive CME credit. You must answer all the questions for a particular course, and then submit the exam for grading. You need to answer 4 of the 5 questions correctly to receive credit for the course. The test can be taken multiple times.

Instructions for taking a course are here.

The AMA Physician's Recognition Award is only available to physicians licensed in the U.S., Canada, or Mexico. Physicians licensed in other countries are also welcome to participate in the Anesthesia & Analgesia CME activity, and Physicians with current and valid licenses in the U.S., Canada, or Mexico are eligible for credit even if they live or practice in other countries.

What will I receive to document the credit I have earned?Up

Once you have completed a course and specified how much credit you are claiming, your My CME summary page will be updated to reflect the hours earned along with a link to a printable version of the official certificate for that course. Where applicable, you may send this certificate to the appropriate accrediting body or society.

How do I know that my answers for the Anesthesia & Analgesia CME exam are correct?Up

Once you have completed a specific Anesthesia & Analgesia CME course, your exam score will be displayed, along with the correct answers highlighted. A link to the preferred answer in the context of the reading material may also be provided, either before or after passing the exam.

Do I need to get a percentage of questions correct to earn credit?Up

Is the site too slow?Up

Tips for users who are experiencing slow response:

Some users of Anesthesia & Analgesia CME from outside of USA/Canada have reported slow response to us, especially when they are viewing the full text of articles. This slowness is primarily caused by overloaded networks between the US and Europe at certain times of the day, by slow network links in some parts of Europe, and by the large size of the full-text articles. There are some things that you can do to improve response.

  • Most important: avoid using the site at the times of your day when the east coast of the US is at work. This will improve your response time by a factor of two or three.
  • Look first at Abstracts, which usually arrive in about 1/10th the time of a full article, if you are not certain you want to see a full article. You can do this by clicking on the [Abstract] link in a table of contents or in a search result.
  • Increase the size of the cache that Netscape uses to save items that it has already seen. This will avoid returning to the server to get a symbol or a button that has already been seen before. You can change this in "Preferences/Advanced/Cache--Disk Cache".
  • Change the "Page in cache..." (Mac) or "Document in cache..." (Windows) radio button in "Preferences/Advanced/Cache" to "Once per session". This will ensure a minimum number of inquiries to the server.
  • Upgrade to the latest version of your browser. Each new version appears to have noticeable speed improvements, perhaps on the order of 20%.
